10 Best B12 Supplements in 2019 – reviews

Vitamin B12 is a necessary vitamin that is not only responsible for helping the human body make red blood cells, but it is also necessary for healthy nerve cells and DNA. People who don’t get enough of this vitamin may suffer from heart palpitations, weakness, memory loss, depression or even anemia. Therefore, it’s extremely important for everyone to get enough of this essential nutrient.

Unfortunately, too many people end up being deficient in this important vitamin and don’t even know it. This is either due to their body’s inability to absorb this vitamin properly, which can happen as people get older or from a dietary deficiency. Either way, taking this vitamin in supplement form is a great way to make sure you get enough of this vitamin. Having said that, below are the best Vitamin B12 supplements currently available.

A Guide to B12 Supplements

Without a doubt, B12 is a very important vitamin that helps to regulate a number of different biological functions. It’s so important that a deficiency can result in the person experiencing serious complications. Therefore, I decided to learn all I could about B12 and its effect on the body and decided to write a little guide on the subject. The following information should only be the beginning of your search, however. I hope that you’ll take some time to learn all you can about this product. And I do recommend that you talk with your physician before beginning any supplement regimen.  Having said that, below are some things I would like to share with you.

What Causes B12 Deficiency?

As I stated earlier, there are a number of people who may have a B12 deficiency and not even know it. They may have noticed the symptoms but have not attributed those symptoms to this particular deficiency. Therefore, I’ve listed some of the common causes of B12 deficiency.

  • Vegan or Vegetarian Lifestyle
  • Not Eating Enough Animal Products (Milk, Meat, Eggs)
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Lupus
  • Graves Disease
  • Atrophic Gastritis
  • Pernicious Anemia
  • Long-Term Antacid Use

B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Being deficient in vitamin B12 can cause a wide number of symptom, some of which aren’t really detectable. That means that a true deficiency can only be diagnosed by a doctor who has performed the proper blood tests. Having said that, below are some of the more common B12 deficiencies.

  • Feeling Tired or Lightheaded
  • Memory Loss
  • Depression
  • Pale Skin
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Vision Loss

Choosing a B12 Supplement

Once you’ve decided that you need B12 supplements, then you are going to want to find a product that meets high standards and expectations. After all, there are a lot of different B12 products available and not all of them are manufactured with quality standards in mind. Which is why I decided to list some of the things that you need to look for when buying a B12 product.

Methylcobalamin or Cyanocobalamin?

B12 vitamin supplements are typically sold in one of two different types: Cyanocobalamin and Methylcobalamin. Although there are some differing opinions on which type is the most effective, most experts agree that Methylcobalamin is the preferred form of the vitamin. Why is that the case? Well, there’s a lot of science stuff to consider, but from what I understand Methylcobalamin (also known as simply Methyl B12) is a more natural version of the vitamin. It’s also believed that it’s more readily absorbed by the body than Cyanocobalamin B12. It’s those two reasons why I personally choose Methyl B12 when I buy B12 vitamin supplements. However, Methylated products aren’t for everyone, and some people are sensitive to this form of vitamin B12. In those instances, then the consumer should choose a non-methylated form of the vitamin.

B12 Dosage

B12 is available in a pretty wide number of dosage ranges. Most of the supplements sold over the counter start at a dosage of 250 mcg (micrograms) and go all the way up to a dosage of 5,000 mcg. B12 shots and injections are available in dosages above 5,000 mcg, but these products have to be prescribed by the person’s doctor. And these products are only prescribed in the most severe cases of B12 deficiency. Although consumers should always consult with a doctor before beginning any B12 regimen, and only a qualified doctor can determine how much vitamin B12 a person needs, I can tell you the recommended daily dosages that a person needs every day for good health. I’ve listed these recommendations for informational purposes below.

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of B12:

  • Adults: 2.4 Mcg
  • Breast-Feeding Women: 2.8 Mcg
  • Pregnant Women: 2.6 Mcg

Although 2.4 Mcg is the recommended dosage, most scientists agree that higher dosages can be taken because B12 is water-soluble and the body will flush out anything it doesn’t use. However, there may be side effects at taking B12 at higher than recommended dosages. Some of these side effects include dizziness, anxiety, vomiting, nausea, and headaches.

Make Sure It’s Vegan (Optional)

If you’re a Vegan or vegetarian, then you are probably going to want to make sure that your B12 isn’t sourced from animal-based processes. On the other hand, if you aren’t Vegan or Vegetarian, then you don’t have to necessarily limit to products that are derived from non-animal sources.

Make Sure It’s GMO & Gluten-Free Formulas (Optional)

It may also be important for you to choose a product that contains non-GMO products and/or has a gluten-free formula. Gluten-Free formulas are especially important for individuals who have digestive issues or problems digesting gluten, so if it’s important that the formula is gluten-free, then be sure to choose one of the formulations that don’t contain gluten.

Choose The B12 Delivery System

Most people go right for the vitamins that are in pill form, but there are a lot of different types of B12 delivery systems available. B12 is not only manufactured in pill or tablet form but is only manufactured in liquid or spray formulations. And if those formulations still aren’t right for you, then you can choose a sublingual supplement. What’s a sublingual supplement? Well, I’m glad you asked because at first, I didn’t know what it was. Apparently, it’s a tablet that’s meant to be placed under the tongue. Once it’s under the tongue it begins to melt and enter the bloodstream. I’m not sure how effective these products are, but they are something to consider if you don’t want to take your vitamins in any of the other forms. Oh, I almost forget. There’s also B12 gummy supplements for people who want their supplement to feel like a treat.

Seals of Approval

Not all of the B12 supplements available use third-party labs to test their products, but there are a bunch of different brands which do. If a seal of approval by a third-party lab is important for you, then be sure to choose one of the seals that are commonly found on vitamin supplements. Typically, supplement companies which have their products do it at one of three different independent labs. These labs include Consumer Labs, NSF International or U.S Pharmacopeia. If the product has one of these seals, then the supplement has been tested for ingredient accuracy or according to the manufacturer’s purity standards. It’s important to keep in mind that while these labs test for ingredient accuracy and purity standards, they don’t test to make sure a particular supplement is safe or doesn’t have side-effects. The consumer should keep this fact in mind whenever they’re purchasing a supplement for the first time.
